Fun & Creative Jasper Johns Costume

INTRODUCTION:

In my Art Culture class we were assigned a project to create a famous artists paintings or sculpture as an costume. I was excited to get creative and start painting again. I ended up searching artists before hand to understand what I wanted and when it time to sign up for our artist, I quickly rushed to the table and searched for Jasper Johns.

MATERIALS:

White T-shirt, paint brushes, acrylic paint and stencils.

I ended up only using the small 4 packaged brushes instead!
CREATIVE PROCESS:

After doing research on Jasper Johns, I wanted to interpret his abstract paintings; False Start. He focused on the colours and the words that represented them and ended up removing the meaning behind the words by other colours. Such as in the painting the mark yellow is a word “RED” instead of its actual colour. His technique on the painting was fun and free hand.  He started with applying the paints in different areas and with his brush, he painted in different directions which resulted in explosive burst colours onto the canvas. He then used a store-bought stencil to for the words. I realized it was simple and easy to create if I followed his technique and that is exactly what I did.

WORKFLOW:

I did not know exactly where to start, so I just dived in with red paint using a flicking motion with my bigger brush.
At first I started with the big paint brushes and trying to flick the paint on the shirt. But I noticed that it was not as effective and quick as I thought it would be. It did not look like how I envisioned it to be.
With my smaller brushes I ended up having more control on what direction I wanted the paint to go.
I then switched over to the smaller paint brushes and it had easy control and applying thick coats of paint and flicking the it in different directions turned out more effective. Filling in all the white spaces with colour, the shirt was started to look a lot like the painting.

I lined up the letters in different directions and also I also cropped off the words in different areas to make it more real.
After the explosions of paint across the shirt, I needed to create the words. I bought a lettered stencil to create the words just like what Johns did. I wanted to make it my own shirt and started to stencil the names of the colours where I thought would be fill in any blanks.

CONCLUSION:

At last I created my interpretation of the his painting into a costume shirt. Now it seemed simple and easy to follow and it was, after the fact that I did not think it was going to look alike, but nevertheless, I put the thoughts aside and decided to just have fun creating the abstract art. At least now I can wear a piece of art in public and people will think it just a normal shirt but only the fans of Jasper Johns knows that really it is his one and only creation of False Status.
